Club Penguin

At Disney Interactive, I helped design and evolve the user experience for Club Penguin. In this pioneering online world, millions of kids could play games, earn coins, and express themselves by decorating their igloos and dressing their penguins in everything from space suits to Marvel hero gear.

Creating a safe place for kids to play online

As Lead UX Designer on key platform features, I shaped the in-world chat experience and led the design of Disney-brand crossover campaigns with Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel, extending the fun and boosting daily engagement. I was honored with a Disney Inventor Award and granted a U.S. patent for the design of Club Penguin’s anti-bullying, multilingual chat interface, technology that helped create one of the first truly safe social spaces for kids online.

Results

Through continuous iteration and close collaboration with engineering, our team increased player retention and average session time, reaching more than 200 million registered accounts worldwide. Club Penguin became Disney’s most successful virtual world, recognized for setting the industry standard in safe, family-friendly online play.
